The New York City notary exam is held at 123 William Street, 2nd Floor, New York, NY 10038. The Manhattan exam site at 123 William Street is New York City’s only notary testing location. Seating used to be first-come, first-served on a walk-in basis. From September 1, 2026 the NYC exam is by appointment only — DOS assigns your time in the confirmation email, and anyone who turns up without one is sent away. Arrive 15 minutes early.

Send your full name, address, exam type (Notary Public) and preferred date(s) to exams@dos.ny.gov with the subject line “Schedule Notary Public Exam”. Your time comes back in the confirmation email. Do not turn up without it — unscheduled arrivals are turned away. Arrive 15 minutes early.

Do I need to register for the notary exam in New York City?

What should I bring to the New York City notary exam?
Bring government-issued photo ID and the $15 exam fee (check or money order payable to the Department of State, or MasterCard/Visa — cash is not accepted). Phones must be off during the exam.
What score do I need to pass?
You need 70% on a multiple-choice exam covering New York notary law. Results are pass/fail only and arrive by mail from the Department of State, typically within a few weeks; a passing notice is valid for 2 years.
