Do I need an appointment for the New York notary exam?
Only in New York City. Since September 1, 2026 the Manhattan exam at 123 William Street is scheduled by email: send your full name, address, exam type (Notary Public) and preferred dates to exams@dos.ny.gov with the subject “Schedule Notary Public Exam”; DOS assigns your date and time. The other twelve New York State sites (Albany, Binghamton, Buffalo, Carmel, Franklin Square, Hauppauge, Plattsburgh, Pomona, Rochester, Sanborn, Syracuse, Utica) remain walk-in with no pre-registration. Bring photo ID and the $15 fee (check, money order, MasterCard or Visa — no cash).

2027 NY notary exam schedule
The NY Department of State has not yet published the January–June 2027 exam schedule (as of October 5, 2026). DOS releases its schedule in six-month blocks, and the January–June block has typically appeared in late autumn. This page is updated the day the official list is posted; until then, treat any "2027 notary exam dates" you see elsewhere as unofficial.
Testing in 2027 is expected to follow the same format: 13 New York State locations, a $15 exam fee, and New York City scheduled by email to exams@dos.ny.gov. If you are preparing now, the exam content does not change with the calendar.

When is the next NY notary exam?
The next New York State notary exam is October 6, 2026, at Binghamton, Pomona, Rochester, Syracuse and Utica. The next New York City exam is October 8, 2026 (by appointment). New York State runs the Notary Public exam at 13 locations on a published July–December 2026 schedule; several sites test every month. The full date list for every location is on this page, sourced from the NY Department of State. The January–June 2027 schedule has not been published yet.
How much does the NY notary exam cost?
The exam fee is $15, paid by check or money order payable to the Department of State, or by MasterCard/Visa. Cash is not accepted. If you fail you pay $15 again for each retake.
What score do I need to pass the NY notary exam?
70%. The exam is multiple choice on New York notary law. Results are reported only as passed or failed and a passing result is valid for two years.
Are the 2027 NY notary exam dates available?
Not yet. As of October 5, 2026 the Department of State has not published the January–June 2027 schedule. It is normally released in six-month blocks; this page is updated the day it appears.
