Where do I take the examination?
At one of thirteen NY Department of State locations. The 12 sites outside New York City are walk-in — no pre-registration, first-come, first-served. New York City has one site, 123 William Street, 2nd Floor, Manhattan, and it is appointment-only: email exams@dos.ny.gov with the subject “Schedule Notary Public Exam” and DOS assigns your date and time. English is not my first language. Can I still pass?
Absolutely. The Department of State offers the exam in English, Russian, Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Italian and Haitian-Creole — tell the proctor which language you want when you report; there is no Uzbek version. Dictionaries, books and reference materials are not allowed in the exam, so use our materials and glossary while studying, and drill the exam wording in English.
What can I earn as a NY Notary?
New York caps notarial fees by statute: $2 per acknowledgment, oath or affirmation (Executive Law §136), and up to $25 per electronic notarial act. Charging more than the statutory fee is a misdemeanor. Income beyond that comes from mobile, remote and loan-signing work, and depends entirely on how much of it you take on.

How much does the NY Notary exam cost?
The exam fee is $15, paid at the exam site by check or money order payable to the Department of State, or by MasterCard/Visa; cash is not accepted and the fee is non-refundable. After you pass, the notary application fee is $60, so State fees total $75. Our $25 preparation package is optional and separate.
What is the passing score for the NY Notary exam?
70% — 28 correct answers out of 40 multiple-choice questions, with one hour to finish. Results are mailed to you as pass or fail only, and a passing result is valid for two years.
How long is a NY Notary commission valid?
Four years. Under New York Executive Law §130 every notary public is commissioned for a four-year term; renewal costs $60.
Do I need to be a U.S. citizen to become a NY Notary?
No — a lawful permanent resident also qualifies. Under Executive Law §130 you must be at least 18, a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident, and either a New York resident or have an office or place of business in New York.

How long does it take to prepare for the NY Notary exam?
Most candidates need 1–2 weeks of focused preparation. Read the study guide in one sitting (1–2 hours), review the vocabulary primer, take the practice test in Study Mode reviewing every miss, then switch to Exam Mode until you score 35+/40 consistently.

File your commission
After passing, apply online through NY Business Express (DOS-0033): sign in with a NY.gov ID, upload your completed and notarized Oath of Office, and pay the $60 application fee. Your pass notice is valid for two years. The Department of State issues the commission and records it with your county clerk.

A NY notary stamp runs $15–$40 and ships in 2–5 days. New York does not legally require a seal, but a stamp is the easiest way to add the name, “Notary Public State of New York”, county and commission-expiry line that Executive Law §137 requires beneath every signature. A journal is mandatory: since January 25, 2023 every NY notary must keep a record of each notarial act and retain it for at least 10 years (19 NYCRR 182.9).
